A Common Misconception About Reading Music

Jane's piano tutorials are for those who play by ear or follow the sheet music, with emphasis on the latter. Jane does not dole out individual notes. Those who cannot play by ear yet seriously wish to play piano, must learn to read music, in order to become independent.

A viewer's comment that echos many others

"I'm not trying to complain but I'm just trying to make a suggestion that your tutorials would be more helpful if you put more emphasis on what keys you are pressing. If people can read the music and play already than there is no need for a tutorial."

Jane's reply

"Many who do not read music share that misconception - that if one reads music, there is no need for tutorials. But that is analogous to saying once we learn the English alphabet, we no longer need English lessons! :)"

Fair Use Provision, Section 107 of the U.S. Copyright Act, Does it Work?

This morning Jane received a warning that her bbdhrggl channel could be removed forever. The trigger was her tutorial of "He's A Pirate", the Jarrod Radnich arrangement, uploaded yesterday. And had received 304 views and 12 thumbs up in less than 24 hours. This tutorial is wanted by many.

Fair Use Provision, Section 107 of the U.S.

Copyright Act: § 107 · Limitations on exclusive rights: Fair use Notwithstanding the provisions of sections 106 and 106a, the fair use of a copyrighted work, including such use by reproduction in copies or phonorecords or by any other means specified by that section, for purposes such as criticism,
comment, news reporting, teaching (including multiple copies for classroom use), scholarship, or research, is not an infringement of copyright. In determining whether the use made of a work in any particular case is a fair use the factors to be considered shall include —
(1) the purpose and character of the use, including whether such use is of a commercial nature or is for nonprofit educational purposes;
(2) the nature of the copyrighted work;
(3) the amount and substantiality of the portion used in relation to the copyrighted work as a whole; and
(4) the effect of the use upon the potential market for or value of the copyrighted work.

In Jane's case:

1) The purpose and character of her video is for nonprofit educational purposes
2) Jane played from the copyrighted sheet music
3) Her work breaks the sheet music into slow sections, sometimes she includes the at tempo version to show how the sections fit together and what the student can expect if they choose to learn from the slow tutorial
4) Her tutorials increase the potential market of the sheet music

Jane' tutorials are free and not for commercial purposes. Only revenue is from Google Adsense. And all will wind up in charities: https://sites.google.com/site/pianoandmathtutorials/charities

Your video was not approved for monetization

I don't care about the monetization, but I care about the principle.
This Integration by U-Sub Tutorial  is completely my own creation.
But YouTube has the last word.
Their copyright division sorely needs an overhaul.

Is Algebra Necessary?

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/07/29/opinion/sunday/is-algebra-necessary.html

This Hacker has no clue...

US math education never recovered from "New Math" that emphasized mathematical structure through abstract concepts like set theory. That was the dumbest move educators ever made. This author might as well start another new math called "Hacker Math". When we hit the absolute bottom, the only way to go is up.

Calculators are the Bane of U.S. Math Education

Watched two algebra tutorials on YouTube just now... disturbing. There are easy ways to solve problems, and hard ways to solve problems. Jane will do those problems in her next math tutorials, without calculators.

Yiruma's Wait There

Five viewers have requested a tutorial for Wait There by Yiruma. Jane hesitates because one of her Yiruma slow tutorials was removed after 77,261 views and 76 comments. Should she take a chance again?

Well, 5 viewers, each from a different country - Netherlands, Malaysia, Peru, Philippines, and U.S.

Okay, Jane will cave in and make the tutorial tomorrow. Hope her work doesn't go down the tube (pun intended) again.

Deadly Rampage in Aurora

Today, my heart aches. My brother's children grew up in peaceful Aurora. What's wrong with our leaders? don't they understand simple logic? Ban guns and none of these rampages could happen!

Who will be Subscriber # 20,000?

Jane wishes to give a prize just for fun. Ice cream cone? The number of bbdhrggl subscribers is 19,998 at this moment. Jane never ever expected her pet project, started April 2009, to continue beyond a few weeks. Life sure is strange. Jane thanks her viewers for subbing and hope they continue to enjoy playing the piano, and learning math.

Non-Newtonian Calculus

Mentioned the geometric slope in yesterday's tutorial, "What is Slope". There are many more slopes than we were taught. In the 1970's, my husband Michael and Robert Katz created systems of non-Newtonian calculus using different slopes. Thanks to the Internet, scientists are finding numerous applications, such as in economics, fractals, and imaging. A course on non-Newtonian calculus was conducted in the summer-term of 2012 by faculty of the Mathematical Image Analysis Group of Saarland University in Germany. Wikipedia math editors, eat your hearts out   :)

Tutorial Editing Trouble

Making tutorial for Amapola (Pretty Little Poppy). Adobe Premiere Elements 10 keeps acting up. Audio blanks out while editing. Then after saving, the video and audio is out of synch. This happens on other tutorials but after uploading to YouTube, all seemed okay. No such luck this time. Mid-way into the video, the audio is completely messed up.Was at beach while uploading. Had 31 views when we got home. Removed. Sigh. Starting over.  :(

Practice, practice, practice!

Great video

An old joke has become part of the folklore re Carnegie Hall. One of the earliest print versions of the joke mentions the violinist Jascha Heifetz, but the pianist version fits better here.

Arthur Rubinstein was approached in the street
near Carnegie Hall by a young man who asked,
"Pardon me Sir, can you tell me how to get to Carnegie Hall?"
"Yes," said Rubinstein, "Practice, practice, practice!"

His advice works in math too.   :)

Adobe Premiere Element 10 BUG

For two weeks now, the audio track is always messed up. Example here.
Please read the video description box for more details.
This bug interferes with editing of my tutorials.
Does anyone know how to fix this?

Wiosna, Katawa Shoujo Theme

Did this as a bonus tutorial, i.e., second one, of the day. It was only one page, so I figured it'll be fast. Except the person making the request asked for separate hand tutorials. Then, to illustrate fingering, I uploaded an at tempo version too. At least it is a pretty piece. Well, 4 uploads today. Time to do nothing.

That's planned for today, as an experiment. Why? Not telling, for that would ruin the experiment.   ;)

Matching Sheetmusic to Jane's Piano Tutorials

As most of you know, Jane's piano tutorials are meant for those who play by ear or follow the sheetmusic. Trouble is, because the requester sends Jane the sheetmusic, most of the time it is impossible for her to tell viewers where to find the score. Finally Piano-Pal, a small company, agreed to take on the daunting task of matching sheetmusic to Jane's tutorials. Sheetmusic links are gradually being added to song webpages. Thank you Piano-Pal. :)

Jane will receive commission from orders, but she assures you, every single cent goes towards piano scholarships.

Completing the Square, Algebra Topic

Our friend who teaches Ordinary Differential Equations ( a course taken after Calculus III) was visiting and lamented that some of his students had forgotten the Quadratic Formula from Algebra II. That is a formula, like the Pythagorean Theorem of geometry, no one in math forgets! That motivated me to upload a Quadratic Formula tutorial, but I have to lay some ground work first. So am working on a set of tutorials called Completing the Square.

"The Show" is No Go

I have been trying to upload this tutorial since 8a this morning. Started its upload via Adobe Elements 10. Left for the beach for our 5 mile run. Message upon return at 11a, "upload failed. unknown reason"...

Had friend over for lunch, then 2nd attempt to upload. Another 2+ hrs later, "upload failed, unknown reason".

What's wrong with this program??????

Oh well, so I saved the file to the desktop in order to upload directly to YT, this 3rd attempt, again more than 2hr later, ended up "upload failed".

4th try, uploading via laptop. Midway through, Windows rebooted! And I followed up by deleting that video on the video manager.

Okay, 5th try. Wow, success! but why doesn't it show on the video manager?  "sorry, uploader removed the video". You got to be kidding me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well, 6th try then, 126 minutes remain...

If this one fails also, what will I do? A brochure to the Neptune Society sits on my desk. lol

Point of No Return

What an impressive composition of music and lyrics! I wish I had taken more time to practice it. But now that it is uploaded, I'm at a Point of No Return. ;(

Next on my piano tutorial list is the UEFA Champions League Anthem. Googled UEFA, it stands for Union of European Football Associations. Next on my math tutorial list is the Quadratic Formula, one of the most useful formulas in Algebra.

Phantom of the Opera

Working on "Point of No Return" today. Three viewers asked for this.

The slow tutorial is taking more than 2 1/2 hrs to upload via Adobe Elements. Such uploads have often failed near the end (AT&T DSL grief), and have to be retried. Half days lost. The worst part is I can't edit anything else, such as the at tempo version, while all this is happening. I need three PCs!

Jane's Back

Don't worry, my back is fine. Was away visiting my mom, did anyone notice my absence? Mom is 94, wheelchair bound, but still lives alone. If I live as long, and continue making tutorials at the present rate, I might exceed 10,000 total uploads. Scary? Speaking of scary, those viewers who commented that my hands look scary now, just wait!  :)

Teacher Can't Distinguish Trigonometry from Algebra

Just watched a tutorial entitled Trigonometry that had nothing to do with trig. Was pure algebra (quadratic formula). Wonder where he teaches. Sigh.

The Worst YouTube Math Tutorial I've Seen So far

I started laughing in disbelief. The whole 9 minutes made absolutely NO sense. It was a topic in Calculus I, with more than 2,000 views and 3 likes. Everything the guy said was wrong. Asked my mathematician husband to make sure it wasn't me who was crazy. He said the good part is that it is incomprehensible.

This so-called "Dr." needs to be exposed, but he'll just remove my comment and perhaps thumb down my videos. Such is the beauty of the YT rating system.  ;)

So those seeking math help on YT, beware.

Graphing, graphing, graphing

Am getting ready for a wonderful calculus topic - How to find volumes of solids of revolution using the disc or shell method. Have to draw many graphs. Very time consuming, but am having fun doing it  :)

Chopin Nocturne Op.27, No. 1

Four requested this one, 1 from France and 3 from the U.S. This nocturne is difficult partly due to fingering the many tied notes and long stretches. Uploading now, the so-called top speed AT&T DSL is ultra slow, and blinks red constantly. The 24-minute tutorial will take 2+ hours to upload, past midnight. Suppose the requester in France will get to it first. Goodnight :)

The Artist

Promised to take a 91-yr old friend to see The Artist movie today. Have 40 minutes to finish a 3-page tutorial for someone who is "stuck" between pages 2 and 3 with fingering trouble. I'd better start working!

I Can't Believe It

Submitted my YouTube Partnership application this afternoon, and it was accepted!

I had to prove I uploaded original content videos. The first ones on the list were the seven "Content ID fraud" videos. Perhaps the problem has been brought to the attention of YouTube administrators. :)

Huge Construction Job

New Google Site in Progress Officelive is closing down April 30. There goes my Monkey See Monkey Do website. Forced to transfer every single page from the Monkey site to a new one - either Office365 (which is not free) or plain Google. So I chose the latter. With over 1,500 tutorials, I have no idea how much time this is going to consume! I tried to make a piano tutorial today, but gave up half way. Worked on this construction project instead.
